Lab of the Future

Modular Space | GE Healthcare

Boston, USA 2018.

A laboratory space for GE Life Sciences by Mettle Studio. Designed as an inspirational backdrop for new product innovation it was located at the Boston Design Center for a week bringing context to design sprints and presentations.

For our research we were lucky to be guided around of some of the most advanced laboratory facilities in London, including The Francis Crick Institute; key to understanding how these laboratories are designed around the staff, research and equipment.

Hero

My role was to devise a reusable lab design using local suppliers for a one off install the week before the event. Then joining the event, assisting the team that went on to produce the willing concept. Within a year the innovations were planned to be applied across hundreds of product lines.

Teams formed of GE employees experts, designers, technologists and industry customers. Worked on opportunity areas in 7 key precision health & pharmaceutical diagnostics scopes. Working from breakout tables full of resources, project specific equipment and walls of whiteboards. As the innovation hack progressed, Biotech start-ups were invited to present their work in the future lab.

One opportunity area team recognised how a set of low cost improvements could see beneficial results all along supply chain and use scenarios. Rather than present the concept text verbatim, the team roll played the improvements, showing how it would apply to GE’s current operations.

Comprised of independent wall and table parts, these can be configured for future uses. After the event these were rolled fully assembled via a goods lift and semi-trailer truck to the GE Life Sciences US headquarters in Marlborough, for an exhibition of the work.

Made from a t-slot aluminium extrusion system, modifications can be made by use of this slot breakout tool.

Build elements of the app controlled custom feature lighting hung above the lab space.
